HK Electrical Engineers was founded by Frank Hopkins and Gregory Kohn to service the design needs of the justice and security electronics industries.

HK Electrical Engineers is an independent consulting engineering firm and is not associated with any equipment manufacturer or installation contractor.

HK Electrical Engineers is an ESB (#2245) Oregon Corporation with offices located at 15365 SW Division St., Sherwood, Oregon, 97140. Our telephone number is (503) 625-4443. HK’s principals are Frank Hopkins and Gregory Kohn.

HK Electrical Engineers carries $2,000,000.00 of error and omission insurance with $1,000 deductible, and has never had a claim or been requested to participate in arbitration, mediation, or been named in any litigation. HK has provided expert testimony in the litigation of projects not designed by HK.

From 9/97 to the present over 95% of HK Electrical Engineer's revenue has been from repeat and referral projects.

 

We are currently completing the security electronics designs for the following justice facilities:  

  • Idaho State Mental Hospital near Boise, Idaho. Put on hold in 2010 after DD pending re-funding.
  • Seattle 640-bed Regional Jail in Seattle, Washington. Put on hold in 2010 after programming pending re-funding.
  • Thurston County Jail (Phase 2) 310-bed Expansion in Olympia, Washington. Put on hold in 2010 after SD pending re-funding.
  • King County Juvenile Court House Replacement in Seattle, Washington. Put on hold in 2010 after programming pending re-funding.
  • Deschutes County Jail Expansion Project in Bend, Oregon. Put on hold in 2009 after CD pending re-funding.

 

We have designed and are completing the security electronics bidding or construction administration services for the following detention facilities:

FRANK HOPKINS, Principal
SECURITY ELECTRONICS SPECIALIST

Frank Hopkins has more than thirty years experience in the electronics design industry including over twenty three years experience in the design of security electronics systems in over 500 buildings in more than ninety justice and corrections facilities. He specializes in the design of security systems which integrate alarm gathering, alarm annunciation, door control systems, access control systems, perimeter security, CCTV, intercom systems into logical control room layouts utilizing custom designed control panels and/or touch screen computer systems. This combines with his experience in communication systems that include CATV, MATV, SATV, video arraignment, video visitation, video recording systems, evidence display, voice and sound reinforcement, audio/visual presentation systems, and telephone and data distribution systems.

GREG KOHN, Principal
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

Greg Kohn is a registered professional engineer and has thirty five years experience in the design of electrical systems for justice facilities and commercial buildings. He has specialty experience in the design of high abuse and tamper proof lighting systems in areas of varying security levels. He is well experienced in the design of emergency and Uninterruptible power systems to support critical lighting, life safety, and security systems.

Historical Roles and Team Longevity

Prior to co-founding HK Electrical Engineers in 1997, Mr. Kohn and Mr. Hopkins began working together in 1990 at CBGKL Consulting Engineers where Mr. Kohn was the principal of the electric division and Mr. Hopkins worked within the electrical division as the head of the low voltage department. Mr. Kohn and Mr. Hopkins have been working together in similar capacities for approximately 20 years and during this time have designed over 60 justice facilities together

Other members of our firm have worked together since inception as well. Our head CAD operator and lead technician have been working with us not only since we established HK in 1997, but have worked with HK's principals since 1992.
